The Signal, 1899 // painting by John William Godward. Inspired by the painter Sir Lawrence Alma Tadema, Godward imitated his Neoclassical style. Both were Academic artists and counted among the members of the "Marble School," known for its depictions of subjects drawn from ancient Greek and Roman life placed in elaborate settings, with especially careful and realistic rendering of details like marble and flowers.
Inspiration; Vivid classical-style drapery…….High Victorian Dreamer John William Godward made good use of this sheer crimson chiffon robe….it appears in several of his paintings and studies, paired with various extra layers and accessories The JFD version has some inbuilt structure, and is constructed in layers of sheer silk chiffon over a silk crepe base….
